King Summer Enrichment Program 2012

Mahalo for your interest in the King Intermediate Summer Enrichment Program. This summer we will be offering the following non-credit classes: Art, Cooking in the Kitchen, Beginning and Intermediate Band, and Media Mix Plate. Registration is open to current 6th and 7th graders, Beginning Band will be available for current 5th graders. There are two sessions daily: SESSION 1 8:00-9:35 and SESSION 2 9:49-11:24. This year’s Summer Session will run from Wednesday, June 6 through Friday, July 13.

Castle Summer Program for New 9th grade Students

Castle High School is having an open enrollment for their Summer Bridge Program which provides students entering grade 9 the opportunity for enrichment in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Life Skills. It is an interdisciplinary; skills based program and not a course specific class.  Students will be able to get a step ahead with the opportunity to earn one half (.5) elective credit by completing the program. Dedicated Castle High School teachers are ready to guide your child to become successful at the high school level.  

If you are interested, applications are available at Castle High School’s main office.  The fee is $25.00 and thecourse will run from June 4^th-June 21^st at Castle High School.  The hours are 8:00am to 1:00pm.  Call 233-5600  ext. 2290 for more information.  A parent meeting is scheduled for May 15^th at 5:00pm at Castle H.S. Little Theater.  You can apply at that time as well.

King 8th grade gets PEP!

King 8th grade students received a lot of good advice, words of wisdom and more from the students of Castle High School's Peer Education Program (PEP). These "upperclassmen" shared their experiences of high school in an effort to help the 8th grade students get off to a good start as the new Freshman class. They spent a class period with all the 8th grade students at King. Topics included making good choices, resisting peer pressure, keeping your focus and living Castle's 3Cs of "Character, Competence and Commitment." The PEP students stressed that the 9th grade year is crucial to their future success. Thank you to the Castle PEP students for taking the time and effort to guide our 8th grade students!

King Builders at Timberline

King Builders, a service club sponsored by the Kaneohe Kiwanis, spent a fun-filled weekend at Camp Timberline. Students and chaperones were challenged with group games, team-building activities and the ultimate "high ropes" challenge. King Builders lend a "helping hand" in school and community service projects throughout the year.

History Day Winner Peter Johnson Heads to Maryland!

Congratulations Peter Johnson!

Peter Johnson, gr. 8, will be heading to the University of Maryland in June to compete in National History Day. His research paper "Thunder Struck Blitzkreig: The Lightening War," placed first in Hawaii's History Day competition. Peter also won the Barbara Bennett Peterson Award for outstanding historical essay in the junior division.  Way to go Peter! We're all very proud that you will be taking the "Cobra Pride" to Washington D.C.

King Videographers Shine!

 Hawaiian Humane Society - "Shout Out for Animals" Video Winner!

Congratulations to our 7th graders, Alexis Klimpl, Caitlin Witt-Lau and Haley Lambert-Zielomski.  They won first place in the middle school division of  the Hawaiian Humane Society "Shout-Out for Animals" video contest. They will each receive a cash prize of $50 and a private "behind-the-scenes" tour of the Hawaiian Humane Society, an invitation to a special shelter event and mention of their winning entry on the Society's website and quarterly newsletter. Their winning video is titled "The Plan",  a humorous short video about animal overpopulation and is posted on the Humane Society website. Two other entries that the girls worked on has also been posted on the Humane Society website. These students are members of the Video Club, under the creative direction of Mr. Clayton Harada.  Olelo Youth Xchange Video Finalists!

Students in our King media classes submitted 32 original videos to the 2012 Olelo Youth Xchange Video Contest.

King has two video finalists in the "Peace" category:

"Domestic Violence"- Produced by Casey Park, Brenda Nekonishi, Christyn Henderson, Grace Schleinkofer, Melody Weatherwax and Mahea Harris-Kobayashi

"Labels" - Produced by Sacred Wright, Precious Aweau, Mia Terstagge and Angel Banta

Their talents and creativity will be honored at an upcoming luncheon and ceremony at the Ihilani Resort. This gala event will be attended by over 500 students and teachers statewide to celebrate and inspire each other with their video productions. Much thanks also goes to Mr. Brian Viola, media teacher, for inspiring our young film producers.

Diners at the Windward City Shopping Center "Denny's Restaurant" can now enjoy their pancakes and coffee under the beautiful artwork of our Cobras. Our student artists are: Danny Dang, Keila Ortiz, Emily Toguchi-Tani, Henry Nakamura-McCoy, Esket Padeken, Damion Scandrick, Jenston Wilcox, Jade Young, Liko Aiwohi, Maile Goldstein, Braden Kanda, Josephine Kane-Royos, Rebecca Lopez, Koltman Aipia, Nizhoni Faris-Benally, Jericho Gabuat, Mia Hawelu, Ezekiel-Xane Lee, Sarah Mendoza, Justin Salvador-Lomibao, Korah Schleinkofer, Alma Tuquib, Colby Martin, Reef Puu, Ceydee Tagura, Mariah Miner, and Miki Suguturaga. The budding talents of our students are encouraged by 7th grade art teacher, Ms. Jean Noguchi. Congratulations Cobras! The artwork will be up until May 14th for diner's enjoyment.

Bringing "Spirit Bear" to Form

Our 7th grade art students are extending their creative talents into their English lessons too. The students are glazing clay sculpture based on imagery from their reading of "Touching Spirit Bear" with English teachers, Jennifer Joaquin and Mary Reilley.  The students kept a visual journal and created colorful trading cards. They then transferred their ideas into a 12" tall clay sculpture.   The clay supplies were provided by a $250 teacher grant awarded by the Windward Artists Guild.

Cobras on the Move: To History Day and Science Fair

 2012 Windward District History Day: "Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History" Thirteen 8th grade King students will be taking their projects to the Windward District History Day on February 18, 2012, on the King campus. Students from Windward elementary, intermediate, and high schools will be presenting their projects for evaluation by History Day judges. Selected projects will move on to the Hawaii History Day State competition in April 2012. History Day, sponsored by the Hawaii Council for the Humanities, is an education program that promotes the teaching and learning of history in the schools. A yearly theme sets the course for students to select a topic, conduct research, interview sources, write, revise and produce their project. Projects can be presented in a display, performance, documentary, essay or web-site format. The National History Day competition is held at the University of Maryland in June 2012. Windward districts students have consistently participated in the National History Day competitions. King participants are guided by Ms. Susan Sugitani, 8th grade Social Studies teacher. Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair 2012 Fifty 8th grade students participated in the annual King Science Fair. Five students' projects will be advancing to the Windward District Science and Engineering Fair on Feb. 9-11 at the Windward Community College. Science Fair is an event that promotes an interest in science and science careers. Students must select, research and design their experiments using the scientific method. The Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair 2012, held in April 2012, with the top winners going on to the National competition in Pennsylvania, in May 2012. Ms. Tina Chan, 8th grade science teacher leads our young scientists to new discoveries. Good luck to our Cobras!

King and Castle Student Council Election Results

Congratulations to our 2012-13 Cobra Executive Board. These students, along with new Advisory Representatives, will make up our King Student Council. They will be responsible for student activities that encourage academic achievement and Cobra Pride. The council will also work with the school administration to look at ideas, policies, and programs that will make King a great place for all.
